Los Angeles Angels
The Angels are proof that having the best player in baseball doesn’t guarantee team-related success, not in the way that it can in basketball.
Mike Trout has been the best player in baseball for the past four years and there isn’t even an argument, yet somehow, the Angels have made the playoffs only once during that stretch.
That “somehow” is pitching related, and on Thursday part of that problem will take the mound for the Angels. Tyler Skaggs, a former top 10 pick in 2009, made his MLB debut last season.
He missed all of the 2015 season after having Tommy John surgery and his results were mixed in the 2016 season.
Skaggs pitched less than 100 innings throughout the Angels farm system and struggled once he reached the big league level. He posted an ERA over 4, but more representative of his performance was a BB/9 of 4.17.
Skaggs hopes he can bounce back, after another year removed from his surgery, and prove that his draft position was warranted.
The Athletics under their current regime has had a knack for finding players buried deep in another team’s system, and turns them into useful players.
The goal is to acquire cost-controlled players from another team where the price is low, and they’ve mostly succeeded in doing so.
Andrew Triggs could be another one of those players, if you look only at his season stats from last year (his first in MLB) you would find a mediocre or worse player.
He posted an ERA of 4.31 over 56 innings, but a closer look shows that his 3.20 FIP was more representative of his success.
It should also be considered that when moved from a bullpen role in which he struggled, to a starter, he began to excel. His pinpoint location and funky delivery led to an ERA of 2.70 over 26 innings.
Triggs could be undervalued at the moment, but worth a deeper look in a favorable matchup.

Free Los Angeles Angels vs. Oakland Athletics MLB Prediction:
Both pitchers are unknown commodities at this point in their career, Skaggs is a high talent that hasn’t performed well in the majors while Triggs is a converted relief pitcher that had success in a small sample size.
I like the Angels because of their lineup, but wouldn’t be surprised if Triggs befuddles the Anaheim’s lineup.
4* Free MLB Betting Pick: UNDER 8.5
Both teams struggle offensively and while Skaggs has the potential to have a bad outing against a good hitting team, Oakland isn’t that. I also like Triggs’ potential to keep the Angels in check for the most part.
