Cincinnati Reds vs Pittsburgh Pirates
Although it is early, Pittsburgh is another club that has struggled against lefties on the season. In this opening game against their series with the Cincinnati Reds, the Pirates face on of the up and coming left-handers in the MLB.
Brandon Finnegan gets his second time through the rotation on Monday night against the Pirates after dazzling in his first 2017 appearance. Finnegan throws a fastball in the mid-90’s but has recently started to throw his changeup more. That pitch comes in over 10mph less and is his most effective weapon in generating outs. In his first outing, he threw the pitch 17% of the time as he struck out 9 batters through seven shutout innings against the Phillies.
The Pirates counter with righty Tyler Glasnow, who struggled a bit in his cup of coffee last fall, but who has a good upside with his 6’ 7” frame and mid-90’s fastball. Cincinnati’s lineup has shown in can touch up right-handed starters though, already hitting 8 home runs off of them in 6 games. For this reason, I am taking the handedness advantage into account and will back the money line underdog Cincinnati Reds at +130.
